The Sydney based company Security Foods Pty Ltd, has announced plans to build an export meat processing plant at Wangaratta, in Northern Victoria. It is expected that the new plant will eventually employ 150 people. The company, through its subsidiary Security Foods Exports Pty Ltd, currently exports meat and offal products throughout Asia and the Middle East. Security Foods also runs a large Wagyu*Holstein breeding program under the business name of Dairy Beef Alliance. The Company has already developed a large network of dairy farmers and growers that supply and rear the Wagyu*Holstein cattle.  The new processing facility is exciting news for these farmers as it reflects the company’s long term commitment to the new dairy beef industry, centred in Victoria.  The plant is to be built principally to service Security Foods processing needs however; the Company will also be willing to develop alliances with beef exporters, producers and investors seeking access to high value Asian markets.

Most of the company’s own Wagyu*Holstein beef ends up in the restaurants and supermarkets of Asia where high levels of quality are demanded. Dairy farmers that breed Wagyu*Holstein calves for the company, through Dairy Beef Alliance, will now enjoy an even greater level of security through a supply chain that delivers long term access to these markets –the best in the world. Whilst Security Foods is a young company by industry standards, it has already earned an enviable reputation in the high value sector of the beef export market. It has done this by maintaining a constant focus on quality and this focus will extend to the design, construction and operation of the new facility. When complete, the new processing plant will fully integrate the Company’s beef operations delivering total control over all stages of production. The modern plant, incorporating the latest technology in packaging, will produce customer ready packs using a high proportion of the beef that goes through the plant. This will create jobs and develop skills that are normally retained offshore. 
 

The site at Wangaratta was selected on the basis of its regional location, its large population base and its proximity to the company’s feedlot operations in the Riverina, also currently undergoing expansion. Having made the decision to locate this new plant in Victoria the company would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Wangaratta Shire and the excellent level of support they have shown for this project. The assistance provided by the Victorian government was a major factor leading to the company’s decision to locate the facility south of the Murray.

We are excited to announce that Security Foods is the first Australian company to achieve JAS accreditation for its entire beef production program.

What is JAS? After Japan discovered BSE (Mad Cow) in its cattle herd the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) responded by developing the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) of quality assurance. This is a national program that imposes a level of record keeping and production protocols, designed to guarantee the safety and traceability, of all the beef produced in that country.

At Security Foods we also take the matter of food security seriously. That is why we developed our own fully integrated quality assurance program overlaying our entire beef production system. Just like the Japanese government, we wish to provide our customers with a quality management system that guarantees the highest level of FOOD SAFETY.

In granting Security Foods JAS accreditation, the Japanese food authorities have recognised the integrity of our quality program and its compliance with their own JAS standards. This is a wonderful reward for the enormous effort our own personnel have, over the past four years, put into developing the Security Foods quality assurance program.
